Reimagine Perception Behind the Mind
Meet Photo Artist Ron Ames

“Reimagining perception is about discovering possibilities.” – Ron Ames
After retiring in 2016, I immersed myself in the world of photography, studying mobile and creative techniques under instructors Emil Pakarklis and Mark Hemmings. I completed the Maryland Photography Alliance Judging Certification Program—an initiative made up of 25 local camera clubs—and, during my time as a professional judge, actively participated in juried art shows across the region.
My passion lies in creative or experimental photography. Among my mentors were Michael Orton, Kaisa Siren, Morag Paterson, and Stephanie Johnson, founder of ICM Photography Magazine. I was honored when one of my mobile creative images was selected as the cover of the March 2024 issue—the first mobile phone image to receive that recognition.
Since relocating to Frederick, MD in 2021, I’ve become an active part of the local arts community. I currently teach creative photography workshops at the Delaplaine Arts Center, offering instruction to photographers of all levels who want to explore this unique genre.
Painting with Light: Creating Timeless Images Through Movement, Not Manipulation.
– Artistic and clear, emphasizing your unique process.
I use my camera like a brush—reinterpreting familiar places in new and unexpected ways. This “camera brush” allows me to transform scenes in Frederick, Maryland, into painterly impressionistic and abstract images that appear timeless in the confines of time.
Each photograph is created through the use of intentional camera movement during exposures lasting from 1/2 to 30 seconds. This process transforms everyday surroundings into fine art compositions filled with texture, emotion, and depth. I spend less than five minutes on post editing for each image, and I do not use AI, Photoshop, Lightroom, or special fx filters. What you see is a result of two things…mobile phone movement and slow shutter speed…and observation, of course.
Whether you’re a collector of fine art, an interior designer looking for statement pieces, or someone who appreciates creative photography, you’ll find Abstract and Impressionist photography in Frederick County unlike any other.

The Artist’s Philosophy
The prevailing theme of my work is based on the understanding that if we alter how we see things, the things we see will also alter. ICM photography is not just a technique—it’s a tool for creative transformation. By moving the camera while the shutter is open, I create images that invite deeper reflection, connection, and emotional resonance. Just as I alter the external image with my camera lens, I know we all have the power to shift our internal perceptions, freeing ourselves creatively and emotionally with the lens of awareness.
